The Tower
The Tower is our church’s most recognisable feature. It is wholly built of timber with six of the timbers dated as felled in 1525. Above the weather-boarded belfry the shingled spire extends 60 feet up. Originally there were five bells, but a sixth was added in 1805, and a clock was installed in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Our Spire’s oak shingles have softened and decayed. In the lower section of the tower the timber has almost turned to pulp glued together by algae. To protect and preserve our distinctive tower, reshingling the entire roof with new oak shingles is now a priority. The required repairs have been costed at £150,000.
